things we take for granted
Do you want to help hurricane victims? Can't go to New Orleans but want to do more than write a check? UMCOR is in need of emergency kits, particularly health kits. A health kit includes a toothbrush and toothpaste, nail clippers, soap, and other everyday items that most of us take for granted. To people who have lost everything, even small items can make a big difference.

Thanks for drawing attention to this. I spent some time at seminary this week with a friend who comes out of a small town about 30 miles north of New Orleans. He was down there last week and I asked him what he thought some of the greatest needs were. He said money was a big help, but that it wasn't as useful on a personal level as the flood buckets and health kits. He said folks were still in great need of these personal items and that thousands of people will be in need of the flood buckets in the coming months. Personally, I felt a deep desire this week to be more intentional about contributing to the effort than just writing a check. I think it speaks volumes when we put our beliefs into action and contribute through our churches, the red cross, and even at the grocery store collection points not to mention the hundreds of other opportunitis. I was listening to AM 870 (A New Orleans station that reaches Kansas) last night on the way home from KC and the folks calling in, while continuing to struggle with Gov't agencies, were very thankful for the effort put forth by the citizens of our country and around the world. We have a long road ahead... I pray that folks will stay engaged in this for the long haul.
